Wilhelm Busch - German Cinema Slides
The slides shown in this index were found at a film distributor, whose business was to lend/hire out or possibly sell these slides to cinemas, for the purpose of public entertainment. They were intended to be shown in children-shows, accompanied by story tellers/readers. Therefore they were part of the film-distribution system. Interesting for us is the probability that they were used in conjunction with "movie-shows". The inclusion of the Coming Shortly slides suggests that the shows were regular pre-arranged events, rather than last minute fillers to be used when time permitted; other popular children's stories (Der Struwelpeter and Ju und Lu) were also used. We have no idea how widespread this initiative was or for how long it continued. No readings accompany the slides. These are the only examples of German 83mm square slides found so far.
These slides were manufactured by Liesegang a major German slide manufacturing Co based in Dusseldorf. Their catalogue of August 1925 (illustrated below) shows that most of the titles were listed for general sale, with readings. It is interesting to compare the colours used in these slides with the English versions. Generally the shades are softer and more pastel, they seem closer to the coloured illustrations found in German books. Also the backgrounds and simple line drawings are a fairer representation of the originals. The English makers couldn't resist the temptation to embellish and over colour the images.

The sets shown below are not by W Busch. Struwwelpeter was written by Dr Heinrich Hoffmann and enjoyed similar popularity as the WB stories. They are included here because they form part of the Werner Nekes collection and provide another dimension to the use of Magic Lantern Slides being used commercially in the cinema and so may be of interest.
