The Society's Last Meeting
Bernd Scholze at "Bring and Show" with some remarkable large-format hand-painted slides
The Chairman presiding
Saturday 11th October 2008, in London.
In the morning Jean and Ken Scott of the Stanhope Society provided a fascinating insight into ‘stanhopes’ - those often overlooked, ‘mass produced photographic novelties’ which have formed a hidden element part of pipes, thimbles and fashion jewellery since the mid-19th century. www.stanhopes.info
The majority of the afternoon was given over to a rememberance of John Barnes, the historian of film and early visual media and a long standing member of the Magic Lantern Society, who sadly passed away a few months back. This tribute showcased film material shot by John and his brother Bill followed by footage of a TV interview with John at his museum in St Ives, together with a number of personal reminiscences. A short sequence of film subjects shot in 1895 by one of John's ‘heroes’ the British cinema pioneer Birt Acres rounded off the presentation.
The closing bring and show session provided some mouthwatering new finds from member-collections.
