No Double Meaning Was Ever Intended: Saucy seaside postcards in the dock in the 1950s
The 1950s saw a sustained campaign against the traditional seaside postcard, as British police and purity campaigners tried to stem the tide of double-entendres. In 1954 Hastings even established its own Censorship Committee to inspect every postcard sold on the seafront. Nick Hiley, Head of the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent, tells the story of the national campaign, based on the Director of Public Prosecutions’ own official archive of saucy cards.
2.35 Ine van Dooren
Harry Furniss in Hastings
Harry Furniss was a notable but neglected illustrator and caricaturist. He travelled around the country presenting his lectures accompanied by magic lantern slides, to a devoted public. He had an interest in cinema which led him to move to New York, returning in 1914 to form his own company, Furniss Films with a studio in Hastings.
