Images of Lantern slides
Lantern slides come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. From the 17th Century different manufacturers and countries engaged in fierce competition to establish their own sizes as the 'standard'. Many manufacturers also invented ingenious mechanisms to create movement or animation in the projected image.
Today the range of slide types can seem quite bewildering. The images in this section present examples of the major recognised types and formats.
