Notes:  The credit to Mackenzie as author is from the Pumphrey compilation reading; other sources do not attribute this story. It may be an extract from his novel The man of feeling (1771), and appeared widely in C19th compilations of recitation pieces.
The version in the Barnard compilation is only marked for six slides but otherwise identical to the other versions.
