11th International Magic Lantern Convention

Programme outline

Our programme will include a fascinating mix of old and new, near and far, with some unique presentations, shows and displays.

Convention events will start around lunchtime on Friday 9 October and conclude late in the afternoon of Sunday 11 October. The programme is still being arranged, but highlights will include:

A wide range of entertaining and informative shows and presentations, by new faces and world-renowned performers, offering a lively cross-section of today’s lantern world alongside the latest historical research.

By kind agreement of its new owner, the Convention will feature the first public appearance in over 30 years of the amazing Noakes Quadruple Lantern. This unique lantern, long believed lost, resurfaced in 2022 and has been returned to working order. As we will see, the array of four lenses allows spectacular visual effects not possible with any other instrument.

Fascinating exhibitions, covering the Society’s 50 years along with a weird and wonderful range of all things optical and artistic, from the Phantasmagoria to the Internet.

A lively collectors’ market, with bargains to be had and items for everyone. If you have things to sell or trade, tables are available (limited to one per booking) at a small extra charge.

The launch of a new book – the latest addition to the long list of MLS publications, covering the life and times of the Greenwich lantern maker and showman D.W. Noakes, and looking especially at the Quad lantern and its visual effects. All Convention attenders will receive a voucher worth 50% of the price of the book (two people can combine their vouchers for a free copy).
