Wilhelm Busch - Smith and the Demon
This article and picture comes from William Hones "Everyday-Book; or Everlasting Calendar of Popular Amusements" Volume 1 published in London by Hunt and Clarke Tavistock Street, Covent Garden in 1826. The legend is mainly attributed to the Parish Church of St Dunstan in Mayfield, East Sussex. Could this have been the inspiration for "Smith and the Demon" written by Busch in 1869? It is not difficult to envisage that Busch might have heard such a well known story or indeed there may well be other Churches which have adopted a similar legend.
