The slides illustrated here represent both Chapter 2 and the extent of slides discovered so far, the number of slides in the complete set is unknown. Busch's original story first appearing in 1882, comprised 99 drawings forming 7 chapters. It represents a gap of 13 years since the last UK set was drawn. The first chapter shows a man throwing the puppies into a pond and as soon as he withdraws the boys rescue them and carry them home triumphantly. Part of the joke in this story is that the facial characteristics of the Father, eldest son and one puppy are identical while the Mother, second son and his puppy also look alike.
